Xi Li 李曦 is a Chinese-born interdisciplinary artist and researcher based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand. Born in Harbin, China, her practice investigates how realities, identities and forms of experience are constructed and transformed through relationships between perception, narrative and material systems.
Working across moving image, installation, animation, digital media, 3D fabrication, virtual environments and material-based practices, Xi Li develops speculative approaches to world-making. Her ongoing research moves between three interconnected fields: subjective formation, collective systems and material worlds, exploring how desire, technology, culture, place and embodiment shape contemporary experiences.
Drawing from psychoanalysis, phenomenology, semiotics and critical theories, her practice examines processes of translation across digital and physical environments, cultural contexts and embodied experience. Her cross-cultural position informs an ongoing engagement with questions of identity, memory, belonging and the shifting conditions of contemporary life.
Xi Li holds a BFA in Photo Media from Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design (2019) and an MFA with First Class Honours from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland (2021). She currently teaches in tertiary art education in Aotearoa New Zealand and has exhibited nationally and internationally, including solo exhibitions at Te Tuhi, The Arts House Trust and The Physics Room Contemporary Art Space.
