Being, Becoming (所是,所成) is a moving-image work that explores processes of becoming through a transcultural philosophical imagination. Rather than positioning identity as a fixed condition, the work considers existence as a continuous process of transformation, shaped by cultural memory, mythology, ecology, and spiritual thought.
Drawing upon the concept of tian ren he yi (天人合一)—the interrelationship between humanity and the natural world—the work constructs a speculative cosmology where Chinese philosophical traditions intersect with the ecological landscapes of Aotearoa New Zealand. Through this imagined world, cultural identities are not presented as opposing systems but as evolving relationships that continuously reshape one another.
A series of mythological 3D environments introduces symbolic figures developed specifically for the project, including the Egg of the East, representing the emergence of self and existence; the Ethical Structure of Self-Cultivation, composed of cultural symbols and ritual forms; and a female avatar whose journey unfolds through landscapes of rivers, plants, and sacred architectures. Together, these elements construct a visual mythology that reflects on becoming as both a philosophical and lived experience.
